The Kreb's Cycle (and Pyruvate Oxidation and the Electron Transport Chain) | Biochemistry MCAT
Updated: Jul 29

This blog continues off of my Glycolysis post as these reactions follow the formation Pyruvate into Acetyl Coa using Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Complex (PDC), and then the TCA, and finally the Electron Transport Chain.

Pyruvate Oxidation: Below is the reaction mechanism using PDC, Thiamine Diphosphate (ThDP), NAD+, FAD, and Lipoamide. These reactions are also taught in Soderberg's Organic Chemistry Textboook, which I have covered in other blog posts.

TCA Cycle: Below is my organic structure diagram of the TCA cycle, which includes some interesting intermediates that cross reference with Amino Acid Metabolism and Parts of DNA Metabolism (also in other blog posts):

Electron Transport Chain: Majority of the PDF is covering the convoluted nature of the Electron Transport Chain with the several metal redox centers, proton wires, and the Ubiquinone Cycle (aka the Q Cycle).
Below is an image from King of the Curve MCAT Site regarding the ETC:
