Amino Acid Catabolism

In many Biochemistry 2 courses, such as CHE 4342 at Baylor, a major aspect is Amino Acid Degradation or Catabolism. This form of degradation occurs when carbohydrate and lipid degradation becomes somehow unavailable or insufficient, such as having a very high protein diet. As you will see in the pdf below, amino acids can be catabolized into two groups:

  1. Ketone Bodies (and thus are called ketogenic amino acids)

  2. Sugar-Carbon Skeleton (and thus are called glucogenic amino acids)

Every major pathway is written out, with particular notes on different pathways and mechanisms to make it easier to visualize the sometimes strange transformations amino acids take to enter the Krebs Cycle. Enjoy!!!
